5 Christmas markets not to be missed in Europe

December has come, and the bells start to ring bringing also one of the most charming traditions in Europe – the Christmas Markets. Created in Germany and Austria, those special markets spread quickly through Europe garnishing the streets with Christmas lights, typical wooden chalets, amazing gastronomy, and a small pinch of snow, of course. Prepare to wear your warmest outfit and enjoy our list.

Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC

Prague is enchanting by itself. During Christmas, the city becomes even more special with the lights and, of course, the markets. The stands can be found at the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) and Wenceslas Square (Václvské náměstí) being about 5 minutes from each other. A giant Christmas tree is also present and makes the square even more charming. Enjoy the delicious regional food like the klobása (a special kind of sausage) and Pražská šunka (roasted ham).

When? From December 1st to January 6th.

Copenhagen, DENMARK

Open until January 3rd, this is the market with the most extended period from our list. Furthermore, it takes place at the Tivoli Gardens – the oldest thematic park in the world and also one of the most visited. This place has a cozy and familiar environment with train rides, carousels, and rollercoasters. Special hosts are also there to welcome you, like elves, reindeers and, of course, Santa Claus. It’s also worth it to note the fantastic lights surrounding the Tivoli Lake.

When? From November 17th to December 31st.

Nuremberg, GERMANY

The Christkindlesmarkt, or simply ‘Christmas Market’ in German, of Nuremberg is one of the most famous and oldest around the world being created about 1610-1639. Traditionally, it takes place at the Hauptmarkt – a central square in the historic center of Nuremberg – and the streets nearby. Walking through the market you can be caught by the delicious smell of the famous Bavarian nuts and other regional food like the Lebkuchen (a kind of gingerbread specially baked for Christmas) and typical sausages. Noteworthy, the market has more than 180 stands.

When? From November 29th to December 24th.

Cologne, GERMANY

With impressive 8 Christmas Markets, Cologne emanates the Christmas magic and counts each year about five million visitors. To attract people’s attention, markets compete with each other with a lot of lights, aromas, and entertainment – no Santa Claus can complain about that.

When? From November 26th to December 23rd.

Colmar, FRANCE

Near the border with Germany and Switzerland, this small French town gathers 5 Christmas markets located at the Place des Dominicains, Place Jeanne d’Arc, Place de l’Ancienne Douane, Koïfhus, and Petite Venise. With typical buildings and lovely Christmas lights, this city takes you for a journey in a wonderful magic world with medieval churches, charming squares and even fascinating channels in a Venetian style. But don’t forget we are talking about France, so, get ready for the delicious cheeses, gourmet dishes, and outstanding wines.

When? From November 23th to December 30th.
