5 documentaries about Karl Lagerfeld

An undeniable icon of style, the german Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel and Fendi’s creative director, died last Tuesday, February 19, at age 85 – almost 60 of them dedicated to fashion. The kaiser was famous not only for his designs but also for an idea of a hard man who knows everything. What few people know is that behind all this character he was a selfless, sensitive, and lonely man. Meet 5 documentaries that trace Karl’s true history, career, and legacy.

Karl Lagerfeld sketches his life

Directed by Loïc Prigent, an undoubted fan of the kaiser, the short movie enters in the designer’s intimacy, who creates his self-portrait in a touching and ironic way. Lagerfeld talks about details of his life and his home, his arrival in Paris and career – all in drawings. From his first sketch to Fendi in 1965, Karl talks about his journey in a rarely seen way and gives himself confidence to the director in a really emotive way. Scenes from this documentary were used in the latest Fendi runway as a tribute to the late director of the label.

Lagerfeld Confidential

The documentary directed by Rodolphe Marconi, tries to unravel the life of the mysterious and enigmatic Karl Lagerfeld. It was 150 hours of recording, closely following the day to day of the designer, from Chanel workshops to the trips abroad. The movie tries to paint the most intimate portrait of the kaiser.

Signé Chanel

Released in 2005, the documentary mini-series directed by Loïc Prigent brings together 5 episodes that take us at the backstage of Chanel – from Karl’s first sketch to the pre-show rallies, weeks before fashion weeks.

Karl Lagerfeld, a lonely king

The documentary signed by the French TV channel France 5 shows the man behind the great designer, Karl. In the movie, moviemakers such as Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai met the kaiser, a sensitive man, unlike the hard-nosed image of him that we usually see.

7 Days Out

The new documentary series from Netflix shows the adrenaline of the 7 days that preceded Chanel’s spring/summer haute couture show, which took place in January 2018 at the Grand Palais. The series follows the workshops, the casting, the last tunings on the pieces, as well as the direction of Karl Lagerfeld during that final stretch.
