“No Fur”: 5 brands that stopped using animal skins

With the rising tide of animal abuse awareness, the luxury brands have followed the steps of designers such as Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, and Calvin Klein and raised the “no fur” flag replacing them with synthetic and technological versions. Every new designer who joins the movement is a big victory for the fashion world, so meet a list of brands that have recently stopped using animal fur in their collections:

1- Chanel

The traditional French house was one of the last to join the movement having announced in December 2018 that it will abolish the use of exotic animal skin, but it should still take some time for the pieces already made up get out of the stores. The decision was made by the company’s president, Bruno Pavlovsky, according to him “it is increasingly difficult to find exotic fur that meets our ethical requirements.”

2- Gucci

In October 2017 it was announced by the CEO of the brand, Marco Bizzarri, that the house would stop using skins in their collections, removing even the pieces that were for sale. According to him, the decision was made in a talk with Alessandro Michele, creative director of the brand, initiating the “Culture of Purpose” project, which also has a donation of 1 million euros for the Girls’ Empowerment Initiative, Unicef.

3- Maison Margiela

In April 2018 the creative director of the brand, John Galliano, announced that the label would not use animal skins in its collections anymore. According to the British designer, the decision was made after a meeting with the vice president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), however, the process would happen gradually.

4 – Versace

“Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right” said Donatella Versace in March 2018, announcing that the upcoming collections would not use the material.

5- Armani

After several disapprovals, many of them from PETA, the Armani group announced in April 2016 the end of the use of animal fur in all its brands. The first collection to be made without the material was Winter 2017.
