Meet the Porto Tônico, the new drink of the moment

Joining the trend of the Gin Tonic, Porto Tônico has become quite popular nowadays as a Portuguese version of the drink. Although it has existed for a few years, only recently the drink has gained enough strength to face its main competitor.

Due to its incredible freshness, Porto Tônico is most often enjoyed in bars and parties during the summer. However, since it’s pleasant, balanced and easy to drink, the cocktail is a good choice for the whole year. One tip for the colder months is to change white for rosé port wine, conferring more complex notes to the drink and more vivid and warm coloring.

However, there’s also a dark side. Made with ice, lemon and equal parts of port white wine and tonic water, usually, the recipe doesn’t please the more traditional wine connoisseurs, who condemn mixing a complex wine like the port wine with water. On the other hand, the cocktail has been a great spreader of the drink, bringing people closer to the port wine, which often is associated with older people or wine experts.
