Museu Nacional do Traje: a class of fashion history in Portugal

One of the many destinations not to be missed in Lisbon is the Museu do Traje, the best place to meet the country’s fashion history.

The Museu do Traje is now located in a 17th-century building in the Monteiro-Mor botanical park. The place was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 and was named as Palace Angeja-Palmela in honor of the families who lived there. In 1977, it was turned to the well-known Museu do Traje.

Also dating from the 18th century, the botanical park is a beautiful open space with traditional architecture. In addition, we can find the first Norfolk Pine known in Portugal.

Discovering the Museu do Traje is essential for the big fans of fashion and history. The collection includes pieces and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present day.

The visit begins with the halls, which are divided in chronological order. The first one is the set of Baroque style costumes. These pieces reflect the great luxury and ostentation of the 18th century.

Empire style costumes emerged after the French Revolution. They are looser to the body and flee from the sumptuous fashion of the Old Regime. The corset was abandoned and lighter fabrics such as cotton were adopted.

We can also find a series of curious accessories worn by women of the late 19th century designed to shape a more elegant silhouette!

The ephemeral 20th century had several trends among its decades. Simplicity and comfort dictated fashion in times of great wars. We can see closely the silhouette of New Look created by Christian Dior in the late 1940s, the 1960s mini dresses, and the vintage 80s Chanel shoes!

For fashion lovers, a special tip: here, we can appreciate the techniques adopted over time for the use and manufacture of costumes. In addition, the museum also has a library specializing in costume history.

With a charming atmosphere, the Museu do Traje is a gem and a time machine for the dreamers! Do not miss our next video and follow our findings in Lisbon!
