Christian Dior was an atypical Frenchman who loved England. It is no wonder that London is the stage of the new exhibition of the Dior house. Entitled “Dior: Designer of Dreams,” it is on exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum and features more than 500 objects, including sketches, clothes, accessories and even perfume bottles.
The exhibition tells the story of the brand’s 71 years from its first steps in 1947, when Dior opened his studio at 30 Avenue Montaigne, to nowadays addressing issues such as the impact of New Look, the brand’s relationship with travels and flowers as well as designers who have worked for the Maison.
There is also highlighted the major productions of the brand. Exposing dresses that marked the brand’s history, such as the 1947 Dior’s Suit Bar, consisting of an ivory shantung jacket and a black wool skirt, or even the dress for the 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth’s birthday.
In addition, the exhibition has a section called “Diorama”, which displays jewelry, perfume bottles, lipsticks, bags, caps, and others. In another section, titled “Designers for Dior”, it gets into the work of the 6 creative directors who worked for the Maison after the death of its creator, in it will be celebrated the way that each designer interpreted the aesthetics of the brand.
In the “The Ballroom” section are presented the famous evening dresses and their evolution over the years. There, we can find the most iconic pieces of the brand, such as the dress that Charlie Theron wore for the campaign of the perfume J’Adore in 2008, which is covered by Swarovski crystals, and the white dress that Lupita Nyong’o wore for the Cannes festival of 2018.
