Get aboard the Elétrico 28, the best way to discover Lisbon

A big icon of Portuguese culture, the famous elétricos are true postcards of Lisbon and much sought out by tourists and used by locals to discover the city.

Elétrico is a means of transportation used in Portugal since 1895, when it arrived in the city of Porto, coming from the United States. In Lisbon, they arrived in 1901 and currently there are 6 lines in historic regions of the city. Only line 15 of Belém is operated by modern trams. The other 5 lines are all operated by old trams.

The best known Elétrico is the 28, called “yellow” by the lisboetas (people born in Lisbon), that route between Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique. What makes this line interesting is the route, which goes through most of Lisbon’s city sights such as Largo da Porta do Sol in Alfama, Castelo de São Jorge, Chiado district and Jardim da Estrela Park.

The route has 7 km long! The full trip aboard Elétrico 28 lasts about 40 minutes to an hour (this runs at a maximum speed of 50 km/hr) and the average intervals between each tram are about 15 minutes. The first trips of the day are around 6am and the last one ends after 11pm.

The winding path between hills, belvederes and squares is filled with interesting surprises. Do not forget to admire the beauty of the tile-covered buildings, or the Augusta Street Arch, as you pass through downtown Lisbon!

Live this unique moment! When you come to Lisbon, take a trip on the Elétrico!
