One of the must-see attractions for anyone visiting Lisbon is the Oceanarium. Located in the Olivais Dock, in the region of Parque das Nações – Lisbon’s most modern area that was built on the Tejo river banks for the EXPO’98 -, the Lisbon Oceanarium‘s main mission is to protect the oceans and raise public awareness of the conservation.
The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the largest in Europe and has been voted three times as “The Best Aquarium in the World” by TripAdvisor’s’ Travelers’ Choice in 2015, 2017 and 2018 – ahead of the Valencia Oceanarium in Spain and the Georgia Aquarium, in the United States in 2018.
The main attraction of the Oceanarium is the recreation of the Global Ocean. An impressive aquarium with more than 5 million liters of salt water that makes us feel immersed in the seabed. The place promotes a closer relation with the oceans gathering more than 15 thousand living beings of 500 different species like sharks, rays, tunas and small tropical fish.
Walking through its corridors, it is possible to listen to a pleasant marine sound. Each room is a precise recreation of a different natural habitat to house species such as colorful amphibians and invertebrate sea creatures, such as anemones, sea urchins and starfish.
In addition, it is fun to follow the routine of birds such as the magellanic and rock-hopper penguins, and the puffin. Also unmissable is the Otters’ room. They’re so adorable!
