It’s difficult to imagine a city with so many elegant and historical places like Paris. Hidden by the city’s buildings, its libraries are also not to be missed. See below the most beautiful libraries in Paris.
La bibliothèque Richelieu
Built in 1635, the Richelieu library was renewed at the end of 2016 by the architects Virgine Brégal and Bruno Gaudin, and nowadays it brings together three institutions: the Library, the National Institute of History of Art and the Schools of Chartes. Within the library, we can find reading rooms, collections of manuscripts, maps, coins, medals and antiquities, an office of scenic arts and the national library of French arts.
La bibliothèque Mazarine
This is the oldest public library in France, which is located in the College of the Four Nations. Its origin came from the private collections of Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661) and today it has more than 600,000 documents, divided into two categories: the patrimonial library (with incunabula, manuscripts, a collection of works and objects of art) and the library of studies and research.
La bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève
With a neogothic-style building, the Sainte-Geneviève Library was the first library in France not attached to a palace, an abbey or a school. But it was not always so: its first location was on the top floor of Abbey Sainte-Geneviève-de-Paris. Currently, the place has more than 2 million documents.
La bibliothèque de la Sorbonne
Its first foundation was in 1289 as part of the Collège de Sorbonne, however after the French Revolution the place was dissolved being rebuilt in the 1800s in the medieval buildings and today is part of the University of Paris. Located in the Sorbonne building, its Baroque façade is also enchanting.
La Bibliothèque nationale de France
Its origins resemble the royal library founded by the Palais du Louvre by Charles V in 1368. Today, its most notable area is the reading room which has thin columns with Corinthian chapiters and domes with glazed skylights. The building reveals two architectural styles of modernism while taking a conventional look.
